Jonny FordWhen we first meet, you might notice that I don’t fit the traditional image of a counsellor. I like to think of myself as a modern, approachable person—someone you can chat with easily, while also being a BACP – accredited therapist with extensive experience. The calm, yet safe and supportive environment I provide has proven effective in helping clients explore their issues and promote self-awareness. I’ve found that a down-to-earth approach allows clients to feel more comfortable in our sessions, fostering a sense of equality in our therapeutic relationship. While I bring my expertise and skills, I firmly believe that you know yourself best.

Over the past seven years, I’ve specialised in working with adult survivors of sexual abuse. I was part of a steering group that achieved national accreditation for supporting male survivors, which ignited my passion for helping men explore personal issues that are often difficult to talk about due to stereotypical values. Additionally, I’ve worked with female clients in the ‘REACH’ service, which collaborates with Northumbria Police to support survivors of recent sexual trauma.

Around 40% of my work has involved addressing depression and anxiety stemming from various life challenges, such as relationship issues, bereavement, and significant life transitions. Listing all my experiences as a counsellor would take more than just a page or two!

Lately, I’ve turned my focus to neurodiversity. Research indicates that over 30% of the population is affected in some way by conditions such as ADHD and autism. I have a successful track record of working with neurodiverse clients and draw from my personal experience as a parent of two teenage sons diagnosed with autism. This has helped deepen my understanding and empathy. To further enhance my skills, I’ve attended numerous workshops and recently joined a public sector steering group which is dedicated to developing therapeutic practice for neurodiverse individuals.

Outside the counselling room, I practice Zen meditation and Hatha Yoga, which help me stay focussed and grounded in both my personal and professional life. I believe that the positive effects of my self-care can benefit my clients, as I strive to create a safe space for exploring often-repressed thoughts and emotions.

I currently offer face-to-face sessions at Durham Therapy Centre on Fridays, along with options for video or telephone counselling.

If you’ve made it this far, I invite you to reach out for a no-obligation, informal chat about your needs.

Best wishes, Jonny.
