I’ve worked with children and their families for almost 30 years: first as a primary school teacher, then as a speech and language therapist in both NHS and independent practice. In the last few years I have developed a special interest in gestalt language processing and Marge Blanc’s Natural Language Acquisition approach for both autistic and non-autistic children.

When children are having difficulties with talking, understanding or other aspects of their communication development it can impact on how they feel about themselves, on family life, friendships and progress in school. I want to help parents, carers and teachers understand children’s needs, equip them with strategies that make a positive difference, and help families feel more optimistic, calmer and more confident.

I aim to be neurodiversity-affirming in my practice. I don’t view children as a series of problems to be fixed. My focus is on connection, regulation and interaction, rather than compliance-based and behavioural approaches.

As well as seeing families at Durham Therapy Centre, I offer home and school visits and provide therapy and training online via Zoom. See http://katecummings.co.uk for more information, availability and booking.
